longing for something more…

by Kevin on January 30, 2008

For the past couple of days something has just been bothering me a little bit.

Have you ever just had that longing for something more…

Whether it be companionship, accomplishing something, etc.?

There’s this girl who lives in the dorms and we sort of hang out in the same group of people. Almost one week ago, she found out that her uncle was stabbed fives times and had passed away in the hospital. Yesterday while at the funeral, her mother had text messaged her and told her that her grandmother had passed away as well. I vividly remember hearing her say through her tears, “My life is in shambles. It’s like we’re being punished for something.”

I tried to say words of comfort and etc, but it’s hard to comprehend the emotions that have come out of all that has happened.

I see another friend who is in a really bad relationship that is really detrimental to her emotion AND physical health. But yet she still longs to be in that relationship.

It has made me think last night at 3 am because the wind and the weather here is RIDICULOUS, but really what am I longing for? What is my heart longing for?

Fear of the Lord…

by Lon on January 30, 2008

As a church this year, each week there are r.e.a.l. food (reflections and discussion questions) based on the message from the previous Sunday available here.
Here’s an example personal reflection on this past week’s message on The Fear of the Lord

(I just pick a couple questions and themes that resonate with me, I invite you to do the same on the blog, or in your life groups, conversations, families, etc.)

The question “What do you fear most in life” is a fantastic opening question. Truth is, I fear many things before fearing God often. I fear deceiving myself, rejection, disappointment, boredom, the list goes on.

Reflecting on the Scriptures call to fear the Lord, puts things into healthy perspective and reminds me who really has power and authority over my life.

One way I often think about it is that fear is what limits us. ie. If you fear heights, well you won’t go to high places. If you fear spiders, you won’t go near spiders. When we fear God who is infinite, and without limits, it actually eradicates all other fears.

Fear of God, frees us of all other fears, because there is no limit or boundary to what God might do. It reminds me that I can step out in following God, without fear, because really, what’s the worst that can happen?

Smiling Addiction…?

by Lon on January 30, 2008

How are things? Good, alright, just fine, not bad?

If anything, church is a community authentically engaging one another.

What if church was where others looked towards and said…

- I don’t know much about them, but I see people coming just as they are
- I see a place not loaded up on happy pills, but where it’s okay to be broken
- I see a people pursuing reality at the deepest levels of life

So how are you?

intro post…

by Kevin on January 17, 2008

Hey friends of Mosaic (and perhaps others who are reading this),

I’m pretty excited that Lon has decided to start up this community blog for Mosaic. I really encourage you all to be able to post your thoughts and reflections as a way of sensing the greater community of Mosaic. I will also try to do the same as honestly as possible so that again we are able to support and pray for each other as a community who love God and loves people.

It’s great how Lon started this because I remember couple of years back when some of us U-Life people were still back at Rosewood and I remember someone suggesting the idea of a communal blog that we could all sort of just update everybody about each other’s lives since majority of us studied out of town. Sadly, it never got started, but I’m thankful that Lon has taken that initiative to start one for Mosaic.

It’ll be great to hear about hopefully work, social, spiritual, and emotional parts of your lives on this blog. I really think when we have people here who are willing to be open and to ask for more help/for support/and pushing people to be more/etc. perhaps then we could start living better like a community. I think that is what Lon is trying to get at from his post. I think that when we should be able to ask people to help us when we need or to be able to ask/push people to know that they can be more than what they can be at that very moment.

Last night when I was reading the post and looking at the picture that Lon had posted up and the first thing that came to me was “toughness”. Just how a coach pushes a player to be the best player that he/she can be. It’s up to the player to respond how strong/how capable he/she will be in the future. But sometimes I don’t think it should just be the coach who pushes the players, but the players/peers should be able to push each other to excel, to support each other, or to get each other to respond accordingly to each situation. I think Lon mentions this as well.

I’m just going along with Lon’s post about “Remember the Titans” and his picture of Denzel Washington pushing his player to do more push ups and etc. I found this picture of the team who probably have been pushed to their physical and mental limits. But I see them as a unit/brothers/team/etc. that are going to pick each other after each fall. They’re continually pushing each other to be stronger/faster together.

null

Yeah, it’ll be tough and tiring sometimes, but ya know we just got to keep pushing each and everyday. Living like this, as a community who won’t leave the last man behind and who is willing to ask our community for more and asking them to want to be more for Christ, there’s growth and blessings to be seen and prizes to be received at the end.

So this is my first post to this communal blog and I just wanted to tell you guys that I’m really excited that in this way I am connected to the Mosaic community when I’m away at school. I had just wanted to perhaps go along with Lon’s post a little bit and again as well encourage you all to post and share thoughts/feelings/reflections.

So I’m excited for posting and updating you guys and even more so, I’m excited to read and be updated on the community at Mosaic. =) I hope to be encouraged by you guys and in turn I hope to also encourage you as well.

So till next time,

Kevin

Crippling them..

by Lon on January 16, 2008

remember the titans - denzel

There’s this fantastic scene in the movie Remember the Titans that I’ve been reflecting on.

Denzel Washington’s character Coach Boone has been really tough on his players and his assistant coach tells him to go easy on them. Coach Boone replies by saying, You’re crippling them. You’re crippling them for life.

I wonder how often we do this in the church?

When we don’t expect much from people, when we do things on behalf of everyone, and when we demand nothing from people in response to the gospel?

Maybe we need to ask more of our people – not because we need a power trip or want to do less, but because of our love and concern for them.

Otherwise, we’re crippling them for life.
