The “babymakers’ small group” met up during the Olympics one friday a few weeks back. During that time of fellowship, the devastating Haiti earthquake seemed to have been overshadowed by the coverage of the sporting events in Vancouver.

Shuk-Ka and Vince were perceptive enough to grace us with this fact, and to present a great sharing about the facts and figures about the history of Haiti as a nation. We learned about where they came from as a country and why the quake that hit them was so devastating. We kept our global hearts open in spite of the frenzied hype over gold medal finishes for our home-country athletes. It really helped to remind us that there is suffering going on in the world and we can help; even if by prayer alone.

What was interesting about all of this, was with all the talk around remembering where our hearts and prayers should be, the following morning, God showed us that even if we happened to forget about Haiti He didn’t. Almost in an uncanny response to our conversations, a large earthquake hit Santiago, Chile the following morning, killing many more people and sending tsunami’s around the Pacific. These massive waves even impacted the waters around Vancouver.

Sure it might just be coincidence – but I’m not so sure I leave it all up to chance anymore.
